WSP appointed to major role on prestigious Stockholm City Line project

05 July 2007

The Swedish Rail Administration has announced the companies awarded contracts to manage projects associated with the construction of the City Line, a £1.3 bn railway tunnel to run below Stockholm city centre. Of five consultancy appointments, WSP has the largest share, with responsibility for the tunnels in the city area and the new City station.

“We are very proud and happy to have been awarded one of the biggest and most prestigious projects in the history of WSP,” says Eskil Sellgren, WSP Sweden’s Civils Director.  “Our multi-disciplinary role includes preparing the detailed design and construction documents for the central parts of the City Line from Odenplan station to the southern dock of Riddarholmen; site supervision and project management of the Norrmalm tunnel and Norrstrom tunnel; and all design for the City station structure, architecture and M&E.  This part of the project is worth around 200MSEK (£15M).

The City Line will be Stockholm’s longest-ever building project, both in terms of time and physical length.  It will take approximately nine years to construct the six kilometre railway, most of it in tunnels underground, which will include parallel track and service tunnels and two new stations, City and Odenplan.

The City line will provide a new dedicated section of track for local commuter trains, doubling rail capacity through the centre of Stockholm.
