The Värta-Frihamn development project

The Värta-Frihamn development project is one of the first steps in the development of the Royal Seaport district. The aim of the project is to concentrate and streamline the port's operations onto one pier. WSP Management’s main mission is to deliver project management services through out the project’s different stages.

The 84 000 square meter pier will extend out into the water, providing five new docks for ferries instead of the current four and freeing up the current land site for a new terminal and eventually hotels and shops. The total budget for the The Värta-Frihamn development project: 2000 million SEK.

WSP Management’s main mission is to deliver project management services through out the project’s different stages, from the early planning stages to design, procurement and construction. Other services rendered by WSP are environmental, geotechnical and risk management services.

WSP is also responsible for producing and maintaining a VR-model (Virtual Reality) of the pro-ject – this for communication and public relations purposes. Furthermore the VR-model is used for simulation of construction pace.

So far a few of the challenges have been:

  • Creating an equal opportunity RFP in consideration of international contractors
  • Finding suitable and economical viable technical ground work solutions for the extension of the Värta pier – the pier will be erected on a sea bed covered with a 15-30 meter thick layer of clay.
  • Establishing good ways of communicating both internally and externally – in a project of this magnitude it’s essential that information reaches everybody
  • Creating acceptance/support for the project with all surrounding parties

The need for co-operation and communication between so many stakeholders puts great pressure on the project management organization. “Having so many parties involved means there are many links in the chain,” says Karl Lagerlof, WSP’s project manager, “But it is a very positive project for all parties, and especially for the city of Stockholm. It’s exciting to be such an integral part of the future Stockholm.”
