Stockholm's new northern city link road will connect Sweden's major freight harbours and ferry terminals serving the Baltic states, Finland and Russia. WSP’s contracts on this extensive project include design of all the link’s systems installations, which fall under the following categories:
- Basic installations such as power, ventilation, water, waste water and lighting;
- Traffic management installations, such as road and lane signage;
- Tunnel safety installations, such as fire alarm systems, CCTV and emergency intercoms.
WSP has prepared the overall safety concept and fire safety strategy for the link, conducting risk assessments, hazardous goods transportation reviews and evacuation surveys for the tunnels.
WSP is contracted to carry out many aspects of this project, including the design of all the link systems installations; Variable Message Signs (VMS) and automatic shut-off devices. In preparing for the technical specifications, WSP produced a number of market surveys that included interviews with both suppliers and users of stopped vehicle detection systems.

New pier for ferry traffic at Värta Harbour
To create the structure of the pier needs 1,500,000 m3 of rock, blasted from the simultaneous construction of Stockholm’s Northern link and City Line. The rock will be conveyed to a temporary site at Husar Bay, to be crushed and then shipped on barges to the Värta pier.
