It is expensive and complicated to build roads over mountains and fjords, and those already in place are heavily used. Thus a team of enthusiasts has formed Høyhastighetsringen AS and drawn up a proposal for express trains that connect large parts of Norway, and has greatly benefited from WSP's global expertise – not least Sweden's experience in the field of railways. The company is owned by WSP's subsidiaries Multiconsult and LINK Arkitektur.
The High-Speed Ring in Norway - two types of train
The High-Speed Ring is a high-speed concept for express and regional trains in southern Norway, comprising a collaboration between two different train systems. The express train achieves the shortest possible journey time between the major cities and the region train stops at all stations. This makes for a complete, unified collective system – including for the future.
New ideas on regional development
The High-Speed Ring reaches three-quarters of the Norwegian population, and use of the old railway network for goods traffic will also make the project be financially viable. Timetables and price lists have also been prepared, showing how industry & commerce and public institutions can reduce their travel costs with the aid of the High-Speed Ring. If the project is implemented it will be Norway's biggest ever infrastructure project. The costs are admittedly high, but the benefits to society will probably be of an equal order of magnitude.
