The Libyan government decided in 2004 to carry out a national water planning. General Plan for Water and Wastewater. The Libyan consultant company National Consulting Bureau (NCB) was elected to be responsible for the north western part of the country, excluding the capital of Tripoli. WSP International was contracted in December 2004 to man large parts of the projects.
Libya is mainly of desert land with small water resources and limited systems for economizing the recourses. The climate and insufficient maintenance means wearing and functional problems for the existing constructions. The ground water level is sinking and the water quality is worsen by salt water in the drains. A unique concentration on water supply has been made by the so called Great Manmade River.
Enormous groundwater magazines in the southern parts of the country is used for the water supply by pumping or leading the water in large pipes to the parts close to the coasts where the majority of the population is living. Except from the Great Manmade River the most important water resources are the groundwater drains and unsalted seawater.
The project includes
- Evaluation of the present situation as it comes to water supply and waste water cleaning
- System solutions of water resources, distributions system and cleaning constructions for drinking- and waste water.
- Preliminary design
- Detailed construction and inquiries.
